When a car will not start, most people jump straight to "the battery is dead." Sometimes that is right. But two other parts get blamed for the same symptom and confused with each other constantly: the alternator and the starter. They are both electrical, they can both leave you stuck, and they are both replaceable. But they fail in different ways, and knowing which one you are dealing with saves you a wasted trip and a wrong part.
What each part actually does
The starter is a small electric motor that physically spins the engine over so it can fire up. It only works for a second or two at a time, right when you turn the key or press the button. The alternator is different. It runs the whole time the engine is on, converting mechanical spin from the belt into electricity that recharges the battery and powers everything from your headlights to your stereo while you drive.
That difference in job description is exactly why their failure symptoms look so different once you know what to check.
Starter failure: it happens when you turn the key
A failing starter shows up at the exact moment you try to start the car, not while you are driving. Common signs include a single loud click with no crank at all, a slow or labored crank that never quite catches, or the engine turning over freely but not connecting, sometimes with a grinding sound. If the car starts fine once it is running and only misbehaves at the moment of ignition, that points hard at the starter.
One useful trick: try starting the car in neutral instead of park, especially on older vehicles. If it starts in neutral but not park, the issue is more likely a neutral safety switch than the starter itself. That is a good example of why a proper diagnosis beats guessing from symptoms alone.
Alternator failure: it happens while you are driving
An alternator problem tends to announce itself gradually while the car is running, not the moment you turn the key. The most reliable early sign is a battery warning light on the dash while driving, not a check engine light. You might also notice headlights dimming at idle and brightening when you rev the engine, electronics acting up (power windows slowing down, radio cutting out), or a whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine where the belt drives the alternator pulley.
The car will often start just fine on a healthy battery even with a dying alternator, then die again after driving because the battery ran down with nothing recharging it. That pattern, starts fine, dies later, is a classic alternator symptom that gets mistaken for a battery problem more often than any other.
The overlap that confuses everyone
Here is where it gets genuinely tricky. A weak alternator that has been failing for weeks will eventually drain the battery so low that the car will not start at all, which looks exactly like a dead battery or a failing starter. And a battery that is simply old and worn out, with no alternator or starter problem at all, produces symptoms that overlap with both.
This is why jumping straight to buying a new alternator or starter based on symptoms alone is a real risk. Parts stores will often swap a part for you based on a guess, and sometimes that guess is expensive and wrong.
The test that actually settles it
A proper diagnosis starts with a load test on the battery itself, since a weak battery can fake either problem. From there, a multimeter check across the battery terminals tells the real story: with the engine running, a healthy alternator should be pushing something in the range of 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If the reading sits closer to 12 volts with the engine running, the alternator is not doing its job even if the battery itself tests fine.
For the starter, the test is more about elimination. If the battery is confirmed good and charging voltage looks normal, but cranking is still weak, slow, or silent, the starter or its wiring and connections become the most likely suspect.

A battery is the cheapest of the three parts to replace. A starter is a moderate job. An alternator is usually the most involved and the most expensive of the three, partly because of the part itself and partly because of the labor to access and remove it on some engines. Replacing the wrong one first, because a guess pointed you at it, means paying for a part that was never the problem and still being stuck with the original issue.
