What You Need to Know

San Diego is brutal on car batteries. Inland heat in places like Santee, El Cajon, and Escondido cooks the electrolyte and shortens battery life to three or four years — sometimes less if the car sits in the sun all day. Most batteries do not give much warning before they die, which is why a slow crank one morning is your one chance to swap it on your terms instead of from a parking lot at 9pm.

How to Tell If It Is Really the Battery

Classic signs: slow lazy crank, dashboard lights that dim when you turn the key, a rapid clicking sound with no crank at all, or the car needing a jump to start but then running fine. If headlights are bright and the starter just clicks once, that is usually a starter or a corroded ground — not the battery. We test on the spot with a load tester instead of guessing, because guessing wrong means swapping a perfectly good battery and still being stranded a week later.

What We Do at the Visit

We pull up, hook a jump pack to get the engine running, then test battery voltage at rest and under load, alternator output at idle and at 2000 RPM, and the parasitic draw if we suspect something is killing the battery overnight.
