Mobile Mechanic vs In-Shop Repair: When to Pick Which
We do both. Same business, same Willy, same prices. Here is how to know which one your job needs — written by the people who do the work.
San Diego Pro Mobile started as a mobile mechanic — Willy showing up to driveways across San Diego with a van full of parts and tools, fixing cars where they sat. That is still what we do most days. But not every job fits in a driveway visit. So we built a real shop at 7898 Ostrow St in Kearny Mesa to handle the heavier work.
The honest answer to "should I have you come to me or bring it in?" is: it depends on the job. Below is the split, in plain English. If you are still not sure after reading, call (619) 853-3823 and Willy will tell you straight.
We Come To You
Mobile
Best for: jobs that fit in a 4-hour driveway visit. We carry a portable lift, common parts, and a real scan tool. Most everyday repairs work fine here.

Pads and rotors on most cars — perfect driveway job.
- Battery replacement & jump starts
On-site test, swap, recycle. 20-30 minutes.
- Starter & alternator
Most modern alternators come off in your driveway.
- Oil changes
Fast, clean, done at your office or apartment lot.
- Belts & hoses
Serpentine belts, leaking hoses, swapped on site.
- Engine diagnostics
Scan tool, code read, plain-English answer.
- No-start & roadside
Stuck somewhere? We come to you.
- Lighter suspension swaps
Sway bar links, outer tie rods, simple struts.
- Radiator & cooling
Overheating diagnosis, hose and thermostat work.
- Engine component work
Sensors, gaskets, accessible component swaps.

Why mobile fits some jobs better
Brake jobs, batteries, alternators, and most diagnostics are quick, contained, and do not need fancy equipment. You save the tow, the wait, and the ride home. The van pulls up, the work gets done in 1 to 3 hours, you keep your day. For working people in San Diego, that is a real win.
Why some jobs really do need the shop
An alignment needs an alignment rack. A tire change needs a tire machine and balancer. AC recharge needs a recovery and vacuum machine. A transmission swap needs a lift, a transmission jack, and time. Spring work on suspension needs a real spring compressor on a bench. None of that is portable. Trying to fake it in a driveway is how people get hurt, or how customers get a job that does not last.
When in doubt — call
Tell us what the car is doing, your year and model, and where you are. Willy will tell you whether it is a mobile visit or a shop drop-off — no upsell. If it is mobile and we can get there same-day, we will. If it is a shop job, he will schedule a drop-off. Not sure which one? Call (619) 853-3823 and Willy will tell you straight.
Mobile vs Shop, Answered
Is mobile work as good as shop work?
For everything the mobile side does, yes. We use the same quality parts, the same diagnostic tools, and the same standards. The only difference is whether the job fits in a driveway visit. Mobile is built for jobs that finish in under half a day. Anything bigger lives at the shop.
Does the shop cost more than mobile?
Not because it is the shop. Pricing is based on parts and labor for the job, not on which location does it. A brake job costs about the same whether it is in your driveway or on the shop lift. Heavier jobs cost more because they take more time — that is true anywhere.
Can I switch from mobile to shop mid-job?
Yes. If we show up for what looked like a mobile job and find something bigger underneath, we will say so up front and you can decide whether to bring it to the shop instead. We do not hide the problem to keep the smaller job.
How do I know which one to call for?
When you call (619) 853-3823 and describe the symptoms, Willy will tell you which side fits the job — straight, no upsell. If it is a brake job, battery, or no-start, it is almost always mobile. If you need alignment, tires, AC, or anything that takes a lift overnight, it is the shop.
Do you offer towing to the shop?
We do not run our own tow trucks. If a vehicle needs to come in and cannot drive, we can recommend a local tow company and meet the truck at the shop. Sometimes a mobile visit can fix the no-start so it drives itself in — see our no-start roadside service.
