Exhaust & Muffler Repair in San Diego

Exhaust work is a textbook shop job. Cutting, welding, and bolting on hot pipes happens with the vehicle on a lift, with the exhaust off, and with shop torches and a welder. San Diego Pro Mobile handles muffler replacement, broken hangers, heat shields, and exhaust leaks at our Kearny Mesa shop.

How It Works

Drop-Off Process

From check-in to keys back — what happens at the shop.

  1. 1

    Drop off

Bring it in, tell us where it sounds loud or where it is rattling.

  2. 2

    Inspect on the lift

We walk the full exhaust on the lift to find every leak, broken hanger, or rotted section.

  3. 3

    Quote

Written quote, options if there are any (direct-fit vs weld-in, OE-style vs aftermarket).

  4. 4

    Repair

Welded, bolted, sealed, test-driven. Most exhaust jobs are same-day to next-day.

Why exhaust work belongs in the shop

Exhaust is heavy, hot, and welded in places. Cutting an old muffler off and welding a new one in safely needs a lift, eye protection, a welder, and room to work. Not a driveway job. The Kearny Mesa shop handles it. See mobile vs shop for what fits each side.

What "loud exhaust" usually means

Most of the time, a suddenly loud car is one of three things: a rotted-through muffler, a split flex pipe right after the catalytic converter, or a blown exhaust manifold gasket. We see all three constantly. None are expensive to fix relative to the noise they make.

Catalytic converter notes

California requires CARB-compliant replacement catalytic converters on most vehicles. They are more expensive than federal cats. We use the right unit for your vehicle so it passes smog. Worth pairing with our smog-related repair service if you have a check-engine light tied to a cat code.

FAQ

Exhaust & Muffler Work Questions

The most common questions we hear about exhaust & muffler work in San Diego.

My car is suddenly really loud — is that a muffler?

Usually it is a muffler that rotted through, a flex pipe that finally split, or an exhaust manifold gasket. All three are common, all three are fixable. We inspect on the lift.

How much does a muffler cost in San Diego?

Depends heavily on the vehicle. A common direct-fit muffler on a sedan is in one range, a heavy-duty truck system is much more. We quote in writing after we check what is actually needed.

Can you weld a hole in my exhaust instead of replacing the whole thing?

Sometimes, if it is in a section of pipe and not in the muffler body itself. Welding a rotted muffler usually fails fast because the surrounding metal is also thin. We will tell you straight which approach makes sense.

Is a louder exhaust legal in California?

CA has noise limits and emissions equipment cannot be removed. We do legal exhaust work — repair and direct replacement — not delete kits or modifications that would not pass smog.

Do you fix heat shields?

Yes. Rattling heat shields are one of the most common "my car suddenly sounds awful" complaints. Usually a quick fix.
