Mobile Starter & Alternator Replacement in San Diego

Two of the most common reasons a car will not start (or dies right after a jump) are a failed starter or a failed alternator. Both can be replaced at your location — no tow needed. Willy has handled hundreds of these in San Diego. Regal Randy left us a 5-star review after we replaced his girlfriend's Civic alternator late at night, an hour away from home.

Why Us

The Best Starter & Alternator Replacement in San Diego

On-Site Diagnostic

Before we touch a part, we test the starter draw, alternator output, and battery voltage to pinpoint the failure.

Starter Swap at Your Location

Most starters take 45 to 90 minutes. Done in your driveway, your office parking lot, or on the shoulder.

Alternator Replacement

If the battery light is on or your car dies after a jump, the alternator is almost always the cause. We replace it on the spot.

Quality Parts

OE-equivalent starters and alternators. No bottom-shelf rebuilds.

In-Depth

What You Need to Know

Starter and alternator failures account for the majority of no-crank and dies-while-driving calls we run. The two are easy to confuse from the driver's seat — both feel like 'the battery,' but the fix is completely different. Diagnosing correctly is the whole game, because a $400 alternator does not help if the actual problem is a $300 starter.

Starter vs Alternator — How to Tell

A bad starter typically gives a single loud click, or a slow grinding crank that gets weaker. The headlights stay bright because the battery is fine — the starter just cannot turn the engine over. A bad alternator does the opposite: the car starts okay but the battery light comes on, headlights dim at idle, and within a few miles the car dies because nothing is recharging the battery. If you jumped your car and it died ten minutes later, that is the alternator until proven otherwise.

How We Do the Job On-Site

For an alternator, we test output at the battery (should be 13.8-14.6V with the engine running), then unbolt the serpentine belt tensioner, drop the old alternator out, and install the replacement. Most modern engines have the alternator accessible from above — 60 to 120 minutes total. Starters are usually accessed from below; we use jack stands, drop the starter, and install the new one. Honda four-cylinders are quick (45 min). Trucks and transverse V6s take longer (90-120 min).

Price and Time

Alternator replacements typically run $400-$750 all-in depending on the vehicle. Starters run $350-$650. European cars and trucks with hard-to-reach starters can go higher. We quote a firm number after the diagnostic, not before. If your battery has been doing the heavy lifting for a dying alternator, you may also need a new battery — we test both before quoting. FAQ

Starter & Alternator Replacement Questions, Answered

Most common questions we get about starter & alternator replacement in San Diego.

How do I tell starter vs alternator?

Starter: clicking but no crank, or slow crank that gets worse. Alternator: battery light on the dash, dies after a jump, or dim headlights at idle. We confirm with a test.

Can you really do alternator work in a driveway?

Yes. Almost every modern alternator is accessible from above the engine bay. Most jobs take 60 to 120 minutes.

How fast can you get there?

Same-day in most of San Diego. Often within a couple of hours. Call and we will give a real ETA.

What if my car is stranded somewhere unsafe?

We come to where you are if it is safe to work. If not, we can recommend a tow to a nearby spot and meet you there.

How much does a mobile alternator replacement cost?

Most alternator jobs run $400-$750 all-in including the part, labor, and on-site diagnostic. Starters typically run $350-$650. European cars and big trucks with deep-buried starters can run higher. We give you a firm number after we confirm the failure.

Is the alternator on my car actually accessible from above?

On most modern front-wheel-drive cars and SUVs, yes — Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, Hyundais, and most domestics. Some longitudinal-engine cars (older BMWs, some trucks) need from-below access. We confirm before quoting so there are no surprises.
