An oil change is the simplest job in automotive maintenance and somehow the one quick-lube shops manage to mess up the most often — overtightened drain plugs, wrong oil weight, cross-threaded filters, cabin air filter 'recommendations' that double the bill. Doing it at home through a mobile mechanic skips the lobby wait and the upsell pressure, and you get the same job done in 30 minutes.

What We Actually Do at an Oil Change

We park, set the catch pan, pull the drain plug, drain the old oil, replace the crush washer (the thing that quick-lube shops reuse and that causes 90% of drain plug leaks), torque the plug to manufacturer spec with a real torque wrench, spin off the old filter, lube the new filter gasket, install and hand-tighten plus the spec amount of additional turn, refill with the correct oil weight and quantity, run the engine, check for leaks, and reset the maintenance reminder.

What Oil to Use and When

Modern engines almost all require full synthetic — 0W-20 or 5W-30 are most common. If your car was built after 2010 and uses synthetic, do not switch to conventional to save money; the oil change interval triples on synthetic so you actually spend less. Most synthetic oil changes go 7,500 to 10,000 miles, sometimes longer if you check the dipstick. Always follow the manual, not the sticker on your windshield. While we are there we also do air filters, cabin filters, wipers, and top off washer fluid if you want.

Price and Time

A full synthetic oil change runs $75-$130 for most cars depending on oil capacity. Trucks and SUVs with larger sumps (6-8 quarts) run $110-$170. Diesel and high-performance cars (Porsche, BMW M cars) run more because the oil itself is expensive. The whole visit is 25-40 minutes. We also do a real multi-point check — pad thickness, tire tread, belt condition, battery test — and tell you what is coming up. No invented 'recommendations.'
