An alternator is one of those parts you never think about — until it fails and your car dies in a parking lot. We replace alternators on-site in San Diego almost every week, and the same warning signs show up over and over. Here are the five most common ones.
1. Battery Light On the Dash
If the red battery icon is glowing while the engine is running, the alternator is not charging properly. Despite the name, that light usually means alternator — not battery. Do not ignore it.
2. The Car Dies Right After a Jump
If we jump the car, it starts, but then it dies within a few miles, the alternator is not recharging the battery. A healthy charging system should be putting out 13.8 to 14.4 volts at idle.
3. Dim or Flickering Headlights
Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev the engine are a classic alternator symptom. Same with flickering interior lights or a dashboard that wavers in brightness.
4. Whining or Growling Noise From the Front of the Engine
Failing alternator bearings make a distinct high-pitched whine that gets louder with RPM. A growl usually means the rectifier inside the alternator is going bad.
5. Electrical Weirdness — Power Windows, Radio, Locks
When the alternator can't keep up, the first things to act funny are the electronics. Power windows that move slower than usual, radios that reset, locks that don't fire — all of these point to low system voltage.
