Electrical Diagnostics in San Diego

Some electrical problems take hours of methodical testing — voltage drop tests across the harness, current draw measurements, CAN-bus scope readings, module talking-to-module checks. That is not work that fits in a driveway visit. We do real electrical diagnostics at our Kearny Mesa shop with proper scan tools, a scope, and time.

Why The Shop

Full Electrical Diagnostics at Our Kearny Mesa Shop

Parasitic Draw Testing

Battery dying overnight? We pull each fuse one at a time with an amp clamp on the negative cable until we find the culprit. Takes time, done right.

Module & Network Diagnostics

CAN-bus issues, modules not talking, communication codes — diagnosed with the right scan tool, not guessed.

Harness & Connector Repair

Corroded grounds, broken pins, chewed harnesses (mice, dogs, time). Repaired properly with soldered joints and heat shrink, not crimps and tape.

Lighting & Accessory Wiring

Headlights flickering, interior lights dead, accessories not working — traced to the actual cause.

How It Works

Drop-Off Process

From check-in to keys back — what happens at the shop.

  1. 1

    Drop off

Be specific about symptoms — when does it happen, in what gear, how often. The more we know the faster we find it.

  2. 2

    Symptom verification

We replicate the issue (cold, hot, vibration, etc.) before testing.

  3. 3

    Methodical testing

Scan, scope, voltage drop test the suspect circuits. We do not throw parts at it.

  4. 4

    Repair and verify

Fix the actual cause, re-test, clear codes, road test.

Electrical work is patience work

There is no shortcut to a real electrical diagnosis. Modern cars have dozens of computers talking on networks, and a single bad ground or corroded connector can cause symptoms that look like five different problems. We work methodically — wiring diagrams, scope readings, voltage drop tests — until we find the actual cause.

Why this is shop work

You cannot do this kind of diagnostic in a 45-minute driveway visit. The car may need to sit with a meter on the battery for several hours, or be driven multiple times to reproduce an intermittent fault. The Kearny Mesa shop gives us the time and tools.

We do not throw parts at it

A lot of shops will replace a starter, an alternator, and a battery hoping one of them fixes it. We test before we replace. That saves you money and actually solves the problem.

FAQ

Full Electrical Diagnostics Questions

The most common questions we hear about full electrical diagnostics in San Diego.

My battery keeps dying. Is it the battery or something draining it?

Both are possible. We test the battery and the charging system first — same as our mobile alternator service. If those check out, the issue is a parasitic draw, which is real shop-time diagnostic work.

How long does an electrical diagnostic take?

A simple parasitic draw can be found in 1 to 3 hours. Hard CAN-bus or intermittent issues can be a full day or two. We bill diagnostic time honestly and tell you when we hit a wall instead of running the clock.

Why is electrical diagnostics shop work?

Because it takes time, proper tools (scan tool, scope, amp clamp), and a vehicle that can sit while we work the harness. Driveway visits are not the place for that. See mobile vs shop.

My check engine light keeps coming back

That is a different category — see our mobile engine diagnostics first for a quick read. If the issue is a module or wiring problem, we may move it to the shop.

Aftermarket alarm or stereo is causing problems?

Common. We trace the install, remove or correct what was done wrong, and put the wiring back to factory where needed.
